Advancing Forest Logging Residue Harvesting and Collection Logistics in The Eastern United States
Description
The project will divide the eastern U.S. into four physiographic regions; Northeast U.S., Upper Mid-Atlantic, Lower Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast U.S. as each of these regions is unique in terms of species composition, terrain, climate, and typical timber harvest practices. This will allow for development of more precise and regionally specific logistics and supply chain models of forest logging residue harvest and collection.
The project is funded to do the following activities:
- Conduct regional field time-motion studies to evaluate integrated harvesting systems for forest residue collection
- Analyze biomass feedstock quality of forest logging residue
- Develop regionally specific residue harvest and collection logistics models, and determine feedstock quantity and cost
- Assess the impacts of best management practices compliance on forest residue harvest and collection
- Conduct life cycle analysis of entire residue collection supply chain
- Conduct techno-economic analysis of forest logging residue supply chain
- Assess market impact potential of forest logging residue
- Develop outreach program to disseminate the project findings and results
